Andhra University Degree Program,Environmental Sciences - Paper III - Microbial Ecology : III rd Year

Part A: Microbes : Microbial groups and their taxonomic position in relation to other living organisms, prokaryotes and eukaryotes; Salient Features of different microbial groups (Algae, Fungi, Bacteria, Viruses, Protozoa Mycoplasma and Rickettsias.)

Part B : Microbial Habitats and Nutrition : Air, Water, Soil their basic features. Photoautotrophy, Chemoautotrophy. Haterotrophy. General aspects of Aerobiology, aquatic microbiology and soil microbiology.

Part C : Microbial Interactions : Commensalism, Mutualism, Parasitism and Amensaisim, Antagonism ; Mycorrizae, Rhizobium - Legume complex; Epidemiology of Tuberculosis, Cholera, Hepatitis, AIDS, Ameobiasis and Malaria.

Part D : Role of Microorganisms in Biogeochemical cycles and Pollution Nitrogen and Sulphur cycels, examination of drinking water, Microbial treatment of sewage - Trackling Filter Method, Activated Sludge Method.

Part E : Microbial Biotechnology : Single cell protein (SCP); Methane (Biogas or Gobar Gas), Hydrogen production, desulfurisation of coal, microbial mining.

Practicals

1. Representative samples of bacteria, algae, fungi and protozoa.
2. Demonstration of sterlization by dry heat and wet heat (steam) Autoclaving).
3. Growth pattern of E. Coli in liquid media.
4. Culture media preparation. P.D.A. (Potato Dextrose Agar)
5. Examination of air sample by using P.D.A. in Petridishes.
6. Examination of soil sample by using P.D.A. in Petri-dishes.
7. Procedure of sanitary examination of water.
